A ‘HIGHLY intoxicated’ man who smeared faeces on doors and windows in a housing complex has been convicted of criminal damage.

Andrew Sisson, 38, was drunk and locked out of his property at Holme Court in Cockermouth on April 5, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said police were contacted by a member of the public. Sisson was ‘highly intoxicated’ in a communal area of the building. Home Group agreed to attend with a set of keys to let Sisson into his property.

Police were then called back out because the defendant was ‘causing problems’ in the communal area and was banging on doors.

When officers arrived, there was a strong smell of faeces coming from the communal area. Faeces had been smeared on the door.

Sisson was later interviewed by police and gave a pre-prepared statement which said it was the first time he had lost his keys and he ‘couldn’t remember pooing himself’.

The cost of cleaning the faeces was £50, the court was told.

Sisson, of Holme Court, Cockermouth, pleaded guilty to criminal damage under £5,000.

Claire Kirkpatrick, defending, said: “It’s a guilty plea at the first opportunity.

“There is a communal area to the property. He had lost his keys. He needed the toilet and didn’t make it.

“He was banging on doors, trying to get back into the property. It [the faeces] was on door handles and window ledges.

“At the start of this year, he was seriously assaulted. He received multiple facial injuries. His mental health has suffered significantly.

“His drinking had got problematic, as a result of that offence. He is working full time but he is struggling.

“He’s on a community order at the moment.”

Sisson was given a new 12-month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £50 in compensation to Home Group.

He must also pay £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
